Debuting the SP Mix this month

Having written sporadically for Same Page Team for about a year now, I'm joining their regular content cycle this month with the "SP Mix". This'll be a monthly music column, where I talk about a new release, give it a bit of a review, and spin a mix based on the artist's influences and peers. The first one's up now, and covers the latest release from Clams Casino, 32 Levels.

You can read the article here and listen to the mix below.

Sunday Coffee Best of 2015

For those in a coma or just looking to relive an incredible year in music, I put together the year's best tracks in this Sunday Coffee Best of 2015 radio show. There were so many possible entries this year, with what seems like a new impactful album coming out every week. With life moving fast, I didn't get to spend as much time with some of these tracks as I'd like to, but doing this show afforded me the chance to rewind the year and focus on the bands and songs I might've forgot. I hope the same happens for you.

So, yeah. There's a couple hours of radio show here as I guide you through my favourites, followed by a 45-minute mix of 2015's best in dance. There's plenty to get you through the next few Sunday coffees. Enjoy and see you in 2016.

If you're looking to take this mix on the road, the Mixcloud app can be downloaded for iOS here.

Sunday Coffee v16

Returning to the friendly confines of your apartment should feel good, but with a relentless heat wave this week in Winnipeg, there's been little solace coming back to a humid one-bedroom. I've been able to distract myself with some fresh music discoveries and I'm passing them along to you in a longer-than-usual Sunday Coffee mix.

This version's (v is short for version!) warm-up includes Botany's eclectic, buzzing "Jotu", which leads into FKA twigs' "In Time" from the brand new M3LL155X EP - a 16-minute album made by an artist in her prime, and one that will absolutely end up on year-end lists. The silky smooth duo of Darius & FKJ's "Ô" and Obey City's "Airy" (with vocals from Kelela) leads into Autograf's magnetic remix of GRiZ's "For The Love". The front half is capped by the gorgeous Recycle Culture remix of Valet's "Clouds", a Gorilla vs. Bear summer track if there ever was one.

The second half starts with one of the year's best deep tracks. "Wondering" from Yotto has two strengths working for it - the vocal hook from his brother CAPS and the slow, dramatic build that still manages to carry a dreamy, underground vibe. After Lane 8's classic "The One", Dusky returns to my mixes with a second track from the Another One EP. "Squeezer" is more aggressive than "Skin Deep", but shares a lot of the characteristics - including a beautiful middle section where the vocals are allowed to blossom and make an impact.

Capping the mix are a couple workout favourites, with Mat Zo's disco-inspired remix of Arty's "Stronger" and some straight-forward, effective pop from Cash Cash and a host of guests on "Devil".

Tracklist follows, enjoy the weekend (and drink your liquids).

0:00 - Botany - Jotu
2:14 - FKA twigs - In Time
6:24 - Darius & FKJ - Ô
10:43 - Obey City - Airy (feat. Kelela)
15:18 - GRiZ - For The Love (feat. Talib Kweli) [Autograf Remix]
19:35 - Valet - Clouds (Recycle Culture Magellanic Remix)
23:50 - Yotto - Wondering (feat. CAPS)
28:09 - Lane 8 - The One (feat. Patrick Baker)
32:45 - Dusky - Squeezer
37:55 - Arty - Stronger (feat. Ray Dalton) [Mat Zo Remix]
43:14 - Cash Cash - Devil (feat. Busta Rhymes, B.o.B. & Neon Hitch)

Sunday Coffee v15

Here's something different. After a good collection week, I have more new songs from all over the music radar than I know what to do with. Rather than the usual formula, I figured I'd drop them into the mix and let you enjoy them as much as I have.

We get things started with the heartfelt "Deadwater" from Wet, a song with layers of early Weeknd-style R&B to melt into some brilliant production - one of the best songs I've heard this year. After that, "Edmonbomb" from Stefana Fratila recalls Geidi Primes with more beautiful eccentricism before Lane 8's excellent, warped "Cosi".

Is "Sparks" the best Beach House song ever? The full-on embrace of MBV shoegaze is admirable, but the fact that it sounds this good is totally surprising to me. It's a pinnacle on the otherwise disappointing Depression Cherry and it's here, followed by Cyril Hahn's dreamy "Grace" with Kotomi and the buzzy, floating pop of Pure Bathing Culture. Mas Ysa's brilliant ode to growing up in "Margarita" leads to a closing from Courtney Barnett (I did NOT get this track from BoJack Horseman, ok??) and, yes, CHVRCHES.

Sunday Coffee v14

Next weekend, I'm off to Eaux Claires, the least proven festival I've ever been to and something I'm generally curious to experience. Being in the first-timer crew for a festival in a dreary Wisconsin city has its threats, but seeing The National, Sufjan Stevens, and Bon Iver in the same weekend is worth the potential pitfalls.

To pay tribute to the weekend, I've started this week's mix with one of my favourite of Justin Vernon's, his cover of Peter Gabriel's "Come Talk To Me". That's coupled with a pair of deeper cuts, with Lane 8's "Loving You" leading into Dusky's incredible "Skin Deep". That strong vocal sample bleeds into the old school "Zero Gravity" remix from Above & Beyond and Arty's earth-shattering take on A&B's "Peace of Mind". Jason Ross closes things off, as he did with one of the first mixes I put together. He's had an unquestionably great year, and "Ravenna" continues the worldly sound he's been able to repeat over and over.
